Hello YFN!

Upcoming events:
o   Wednesday, September 1st - "Plan the Plan": community members are invited to join us for a full-day of planning for YFN! Please see the attached poster for more details.

o  
Thursday, September 2nd  - Honoring Our Youth Ceremony! Because our Youth, Yes You...deserve to be celebrated! Family gathering and dinner celebration is scheduled for Thursday, September 2nd in the YFN Community Hall starting at 5:30 p.m. A special acknowledgement ceremony will be given for the young people of Ittatsoo so we expect to see you all there! Awards and recognition will be given, so please don't miss it!

Monday, September 6th - Office closure: all YFN offices will be closed in observance of the Labor Day holiday on Monday, September 6, 2010; we will reopen for regular office hours on Tuesday, September 7, 2010.

Thursday, September 16th - the YFN Treaty Team will be hosting a Treaty Update meeting and a dinner. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. More information will follow!

Thursday, September 23rd - there will be a Residential School Information Session on this day between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the YFN Community Hall.

Saturday, October 30th - 2010 YFN AGM is scheduled for Saturday, October 30th, starting at 10 a.m. in the YFN Community Hall.

News about News? Umacuk (or “talking about”, pronounced “Oo-moot-sook”) was a name that was submitted by YFN Member, Bob Mundy. Umacuk will soon hit the presses and sent to the mailboxes of all YFN members whose mailing address we have on file. We are still seeking a logo for our newspaper and there will be a $500.00 prize awarded for the most favored logo design. Umacuk will be sent to you in replacement of the Ha-shilth-sa News, which can still be accessed online. Here is the link: http://www.nuuchahnulth.org/tribal-council/hashilth.html.

·      YFN Welcomes new staff!

o   Tamara Nelson joined the us on August 30, 2010 as the new CFO.  She has a Masters degree in Business Administration and an extensive accounting and finance background including private and public accounting as well as business banking.  Most recently, Tamara was the manager of finance at Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.  She moved from Victoria to Ucluelet two years ago, intending to stay for a maximum of six months, but loved the area so much that she decided to set up residence in Ucluelet and hasn't looked back.  She looks forward to learning about the YFN business and being a productive member of the staff. Feel free to stop in and introduce yourself! Tamara can be found at the administration office in the Hu-pa-too Business Centre (100 Hit-tat-soo Road, Ittatsoo - Ucluelet East).

News from the Community Health Nurse, Michele Eng:

o   Parents and Tots Group Mondays at 1pm. Open discussion for parents/guardians and tots with topics such as nutrition, healthy eating, pre/post natal, newborn care, parenting. Next session Monday, September 13th. Call 726-7343 for more information.

o   Are your childhood or adult immunizations up to date?  Back to school in September, back to routines. For more information about immunizations or about your record, call 726-7343 to speak with Michele Eng, CHN, your local public health unit (VIHA Tofino 725-2172 or Port Alberni Health Unit at 731-1315), or your family doctor. ·       The bears are getting hungry! Please remember to properly close the lids on the garbage bins to ensure that they stick to their natural trails.

Upcoming Training Opportunity! Residential Building Maintenance 12 Course: YFN will be hosting a fantastic training program that will teach participants basic techniques in home maintenance and light construction. The course includes: tool use and tool safety, framing, drywall, painting, flooring, plumbing and electrical. It is two weeks in length and all students come out of it with their own tools to do each of the above jobs.  Students will actually build structures with all these components. Students will receive credit towards their adult graduation or school age graduation certificate. Registration is limited! Sign up at either the YFN Health Centre or the YFN Administration OfficeJ!
