Canoe Journey Coordinator (Part-time, Temporary)

The Canoe Journey Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day programming and planning for the upcoming 2025 Canoe Journey from hitac̓u to Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe. The Canoe Journey Coordinator will work with the Department of Culture and Heritage in planning and implementing programs that will allow for the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ canoe team to begin and end the journey strong and healthy; physically, mentally, and spiritually. The Canoe Journey Coordinator reports to the Manager of Culture and Heritage.

This is a temporary position from April 1, 2025 – August 31, 2025.  April 1-July 23, 2025, and August 4-31, 2025 15 hours per week.  July 23 – August 3, 2025 full time, 7.5 hours per day, 37.5 hours per week.

This position pays $25 per hour.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Planning and overseeing weekly training sessions (Canoe and Gym based)
  • Planning and coordination of weekly canoe paddles and protocol practices
  • Planning and managing the Canoe Journey route and schedule
  • Planning and managing the safety crew route and schedule
  • Planning and managing the support team including travel and accommodation
  • Organizing host responsibilities for visiting canoes July 23, 2025

Required

  • Extensive past experience with Canoe Journeys, or extensive experience in canoe paddling and journeying in the traditional Indigenous way
  • Flexible schedule – Availability to plan and attend weekly training sessions
  • Certification in water safety and rescue (e.g., Lifesaving Society, Paddle Canada, or equivalent) to ensure participant safety.
  • Strong understanding of canoe safety protocols, emergency procedures, and first aid certification (e.g., Standard First Aid, CPR-C, or Wilderness First Aid).
  • Experience working with all ages and walks of life
  • Experience with personal and group healing journeys
  • Experience with planning personal and group exercise and training programs
  • Commitment to the group journey and to group safety
  • Clear Criminal Record check for Vulnerable Sector
