The Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government is a modern treaty government located in the community of hitac̓u on the west coast of Vancouver Island, on the eastern shore of Ucluelet Inlet.

As a Self-Governing Indigenous Government, the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government continues to promote education and community programs that enhance Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ identity.

Position Summary

Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government policies, standards, practices, and procedures, as directed by the Director of Health and Social Services. Maintains confidentiality on all matters relating to the affairs of the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ. The Care Aide Support Worker supports individuals in the community to maintain a healthy home environment, provide personal care, and to provide cultural support to individuals as required.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Following the care orders of the physician/nurse, ensures that client’s medication is taken at the correct time and the correct dosage.
  • Following the care orders of the physician/nurse/health care professional, carries out other tasks such as physiotherapy exercises.
  • Assists clients with personal care activities including bathing, dressing, toileting, grooming, skin care and foot care, mobility assistance, activity and exercise.
  • Provides in home assistance with other personal care activities as assigned by the Community Wellness Worker.
  • Observes client behaviour and appearance. Reports unsafe conditions, changes in the client’s physical or mental behaviour, reaction to drugs or treatments to the physician/nurse.
  • Demonstrates respects and kindness to clients and their families. Works to protect the rights and support the dignity and self-worth of clients.
  • Maintains records of services and submits reports as required.
  • Plans menus, prepares and serves meals including special diets. Assists with feeding as needed.
  • Performs housekeeping tasks as needed or directed.
  • Creates activities for clients; including assisting elders to attend elders luncheons and other related community events. Coordinates a schedule for shopping, appointments, etc.
  • Follows safe work procedures when performing personal care, home management and food preparation tasks.
  • Ensures safety of self and client.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as necessary in the performance of the position, and as assigned by the Community Wellness Coordinator and Director of Health and Social Services.

Qualifications

Training, Education and Experience
  • Grade 12 diploma or GED and Certification as a Residential Care Worker, Long Term Care Aide or equivalent from a recognized program.
  • Experience in personal care and home management tasks and working with the elderly and people with disabilities.
  • Current First Aid certificate.
  • Food Safe certifications.
  • Up-to-date immunizations and clear TB Test.
  • Satisfactory criminal records check (vulnerable sector).
  • Current Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence and access to a vehicle.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Enjoys working with individuals and families and contributing to their health and wellness.
  • Good listening, communication, and interpersonal skills including conflict resolution.
  • Ability to follow client medical care plans.
  • Basic writing skills and ability to complete weekly reports.
  • Strong cultural sensitivity and understanding. Ability to build caring relationships with a variety of age groups built on trust.
  • Good planning and organizational skills.
  • Excellent client service skills. Friendly, positive, responsive, professional and helpful.
  • Able to work independently as well as working within a collaborative team framework.
  • Basic computer skills to check email and complete basic reports.
  • Genuine respect for Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ traditions, culture and protocols.
