Custodian
The Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government is a modern treaty government located in the community of hitac̓u on the west coast of Vancouver Island, on the eastern shore of Ucluelet Inlet.
The Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government is a member of the Maa-nulth Treaty Society and, through the Maa-nulth First Nations Final Agreement, is a modern treaty Nation operating with a government-to- government relationship with Canada and the province of British Columbia. As a Self-Governing Indigenous Government, the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government continues to promote education and community programs that enhance Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ identity.
Position Summary
Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government policies, standards, practices, and procedures, as directed by the Manager of the Assets Department. Maintains confidentiality on all matters relating to the affairs of the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ. The Custodian is responsible for providing the custodial, janitorial, and maintenance care and checks of the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government Offices/Buildings and other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Primary Responsibilities
- Provides information to the Manager to assist in the development of janitorial and maintenance standards and schedules, as well as the need for repairs to offices, reception areas, washrooms, furniture, fixtures, equipment and buildings.
- Cleans Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government buildings and offices in accordance with the approved janitorial schedule and acceptable health standards.
- Preforms custodial/janitorial responsibilities including:
- Sweeping, dusting, wet mopping, scrubbing and spot cleaning of restroom surfaces
- Replenishing washroom supplies
- Wet mopping, stripping, waxing, sealing and buffing floors
- Trash pickup and removal
- Window washing
- Vacuuming, spot cleaning and shampooing carpets
- Dusting and cleaning light fixtures and blinds
- Washing walls
- Operating powered custodial equipment and other custodial equipment tools
- Maintaining and performing preventive maintenance of equipment as directed
- Daily cleaning assignments
- Routine checks for cleanliness and servicing
- Maintains supply and equipment inventory as directed
- Keeps janitor closets clean and orderly
- Cleans up after an emergency
- Performs basic building maintenance checks, to include but not limited to, routine checks of building equipment and systems, removal of graffiti, power washing, whipper snipping and weeding of garden beds and around government buildings as assigned.
- Ensures that janitorial supplies are stored in a safe location in accordance with the requirements of WHMIS and other janitorial standards.
- Maintains a safe working environment and reports unsafe conditions to the Assets Manager.
- Follows safe work procedures including reading all label instructions on chemical materials and operating instruction for powered equipment.
- Assists other Assets staff and provides essential back-up of duties as required and as trained to do so.
Qualifications
Training, Education and Experience
- Grade 12 diploma preferred.
- WHMIS Certification and knowledge of WorkSafeBC guidelines as applicable.
- 1 year of janitorial/custodial experience.
- Satisfactory criminal records check.
- Current Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence and access to vehicle.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Working knowledge of methods, materials, chemicals, disinfectants and equipment used in custodial/janitorial/maintenance work.
- Ability to operate powered equipment normally found in janitorial/maintenance operations.
- Knowledge of and ability to follow safe work procedures including hazardous materials.
- Excellent client service skills. Friendly, positive, responsive, professional and helpful.
- Able to work independently as well as working within a collaborative team framework.
- Basic computer skills including MS
- Genuine respect for Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ traditions, culture and protocols.
