Garden Assistant – Part-time, Seasonal
The Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government is a modern treaty government located in the community of hitac̓u on the west coast of Vancouver Island, on the eastern shore of Ucluelet Inlet.
The Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government is a member of the Maa-nulth Treaty Society and, through the Maa-nulth First Nations Final Agreement, is a modern treaty Nation operating with a government-to- government relationship with Canada and the province of British Columbia. As a Self-Governing Indigenous Government, the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government continues to promote education and community programs that enhance Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ identity.
Position Summary
Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government is seeking a Garden Assistant to support the development and operations of a community garden in hitac̓u. The Assistant will participate in general garden construction and maintenance and performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government policies, standards, practices, and procedures. They will receive training and guidance from the Garden Lead, the Traditional Foods Coordinator, and a network of experienced gardeners. This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on gardening and construction experience, develop valuable employability skills, and strengthen community connections. This is a seasonal position of 25-30 hours per week for May/June to October.
Primary Responsibilities
- Performs general garden construction tasks including building boxes, moving materials and planting.
- Completes basic gardening tasks such as weeding, watering, harvesting, and pest management.
- Communicates effectively with staff and volunteers.
- Promotes a positive and respectful work environment.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as necessary in the performance of the position, and as assigned by the Traditional Foods Coordinator and Garden Lead.
Qualifications
Training, Education and Experience
- Experience gardening and/or working outdoors is preferred.
- Satisfactory criminal records check.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of or interest in community engagement and horticulture.
- Able to take instruction and work within a collaborative team framework.
- Physically fit and able to lift 50lbs and perform repetitive lighter lifting and turning.
- Able to comfortably work with power tools.
- Genuine respect for Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ traditions, culture, and protocols.
