The Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government is a modern treaty government located in the community of hitac̓u on the west coast of Vancouver Island, on the eastern shore of Ucluelet Inlet.

The Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government is a member of the Maa-nulth Treaty Society and, through the Maa-nulth First Nations Final Agreement, is a modern treaty Nation operating with a government-to- government relationship with Canada and the province of British Columbia. As a Self-Governing Indigenous Government, the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government continues to promote education and community programs that enhance Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ identity.

Position Summary

Hišuukʔaaqƛin huuḥtakšiiḥ The Language Learner performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government policies, standards, practices, and procedures, as directed by the Manager of Language Services. Maintains confidentiality on all matters relating to the affairs of the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ. The Language Learners work within the Culture, Language & Heritage Department to support language revitalization efforts. The intensive program for language learning also includes teaching language to others. This position is part-time, with a projected start date of August or September and will be a term position up to one year with the possibility of extension subject to review.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Learning language as a team to build fluency.
  • Commit to learning for 15 hours a week; 12 hours in-person/online and 3 hours outside of working hours.
  • Working closely with fluent speakers to learn language.
  • Document language learning through videos, pictures, and recordings.
  • Travelling as necessary for language conferences or learning with neighbouring nations.
  • To learn and teach what you know using the “Where Are Your Keys” method.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as necessary in the performance of the position, and as assigned by the Manager of Language Services.

Qualifications

Training, Education and Experience
  • Previous teaching experience is an asset.
  • Satisfactory criminal records check.
  • Current Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence and access to a vehicle.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Willing to be animated and share language in a fun way!
  • Must have a basic understanding of the language.
  • Able to work well within a collaborative team framework.
  • Excellent client service skills. Friendly, positive, responsive, professional, and helpful.
  • Ability to exercise a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Intermediate computer skills include MS Office.
  • Genuine respect for Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ traditions, culture and protocols.
