Marine Response Specialist – Full-time, Term
The Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government (YG) is a member of the Maa-nulth Treaty Society and, through the Maa-nulth First Nations Final Agreement, is a modern treaty Nation operating with a government-to-government relationship with Canada and the province of British Columbia. Position Summary
The Marine Response Specialist (MRS) is responsible for developing and coordinating Marine Emergency Response initiatives across the Maa-nulth Domestic Fishing Area and Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ̣ haḥuułii (traditional territory). This role serves to improve and further develop Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ̣ marine emergency preparedness and response objectives, including oil spill mitigation, preparedness drills and training, vessel incident management, and addressing marine environmental hazards.
The MRS works closely with the YG Marine Stewardship Technicians, the YG Manager of Fisheries and Wildlife, the YG Director of Lands and Resources, and other staff and contractors to perform marine-based activities.
Key responsibilities include the development of a Marine Emergency Response Plan, liaising with local, regional, and federal marine emergency agencies, and ensuring compliance with relevant maritime safety and environmental standards. Additional duties include promoting vessel safety with staff and community members, coordinating maintenance of marine vessels and equipment, and supporting marine transport for cultural activities and environmental monitoring, as well as supporting field monitoring and data collection, as needed. The MRS will provide specialized support for marine field operations within the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ̣ Government Department of Lands and Resources and may assist in other departmental operations as assigned and approved.

Qualifications
Training, Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in science, Resource Management, or related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
- Minimum 3-5 years experience in marine stewardship, emergency response, or related field.
- Certification in marine emergency response, such as Marine Emergency Duties (MED) or Incident Command System (ICS).
- Valid Transport Canada certifications, such as Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP), Med-A3, ROC-M and Marine First Aid.
- Current Class 5 BC Driver’s License.
- Experienced and willing to operating marine vessels in protected and open ocean environments.
- Hands-on experience with vessel operations, maintenance, and marine monitoring technologies.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of relevant marine regulations and standards.
- Strong organizational and communications skills, with the ability to integrate scientific and traditional knowledge in marine planning.
- Ability to collect and record data and observations with accuracy.
- Effectively communicate and relay findings through clear writing and reporting skills.
- Ability to operate computer programs, such as Microsoft 360.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to staff members, including offering instructions to uncertainties collaboratively.
- Ability to exercise a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
- Able to work independently with minimal day-to-day supervision as well as working within a collaborative team framework.
- Genuine respect for Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ traditions, culture and protocols.
